The Causes of Dental Emergencies
What causes dental emergencies? For many, injuries while playing sports, or engaging in activities like boxing or martial arts, could lead to a cracked, chipped, or knocked out/loose tooth. But you could also end up with an injured tooth if you bite down on a hard object or suffer an accidental injury outside of the field or arena. For some, objects could become trapped between the teeth or under the gums, or a restoration/prosthetic could be damaged or compromised. When a dental emergency happens, you need to see us right away! You can also take a few initial steps to ease your discomfort.
Easing Your Discomfort
First, rinse with warm water. If something is caught between the teeth or under the gums, try to remove it only with floss, otherwise you risk further injury. You can use cloth or gauze to stem any bleeding, and a cold compress to control facial swelling. An over-the-counter pain reliever is also recommended. If a tooth is broken, try to recover any pieces to bring with you to the office. If a tooth is knocked out, then pick it up only by the crown, not the roots, and place it in a sealed container of milk or salt water. Bring it with you to the office!
