How Do We Restore Teeth Following Emergencies?

prairie village dental emergencyIf you sustain an injury that cracks or chips a tooth, or leaves one knocked loose or out completely, then you need help. With dental emergency treatment, we can ease discomfort and also repair the damage! In today’s blog, Dr. Robert M. Browne talks about restoring your smile following dental emergencies.

Common Dental Emergency Situations

What are common dental emergency situations that we should be aware of? Well, some are obvious. If you have sustained an injury to the tooth and a tooth is chipped or broken, you need to see our team right away. If there is an injury and no damage is visible, consider an appointment as a cracked tooth could be invisible to the naked eye and still leave you vulnerable to serious risks! If a tooth begins to hurt suddenly or you have an object caught between the teeth or under the gums that floss cannot remove, then let us know. We also want to see you if a tooth is knocked loose or out completely.

Your Immediate Response

You should call our team right away. If you reach us during our usual operating hours, we would like to see you right away, possibly same-day. If we are closed, then please call anyway and leave a message so we can reach out with possible appointment times.

In the meantime, you can take action to help ease your initial discomfort. For example, rinse with warm water and use cloth or gauze to stem any bleeding. You can also control facial swelling with a cold compress and take an over-the-counter pain reliever to ease pain. If a tooth is broken and you can find any pieces, bring them with you. If the tooth is knocked out, pick it up only by the crown, don’t touch the roots. Then place it in a sealed container of salt water or milk and bring it to the office with you.

Our Custom Restorations

How do we repair our teeth? If one is chipped, then we could offer repair in one visit with dental bonding. If you have more severe breakage or a fracture, we could offer a crown, which is a more substantial restoration that covers the entire tooth structure. Our team can also restore a knocked-out tooth to its proper place in your smile, and if for some reason the tooth is lost completely, we could discuss prosthetics like a bridge or a dental implant.
