When a tooth is fully or partially avulsed, also known as a knocked-out tooth, then you need to see our team. With dental emergency treatment, our team can protect smiles from major complications and keep it full! In today’s blog, Dr. Robert M. Browne talks about how we respond to your dental emergency!
Reacting to Your Knocked-Out Tooth
When a tooth is knocked loose or out, don’t panic! Instead, if the tooth is loose gently rinse with warm water and use gauze or cloth to stem the bleeding. A cold compress to the side of the face could help control swelling too. Next, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever to ease your discomfort until we can see you and ensure the tooth is returned to the socket properly.
If the tooth is knocked out fully, then recover it right away. Pick it up by the crown, don’t touch the root portions at all. You can gently rinse away dirt and debris, but keep tissues intact. If you can see us right away, then you can put the tooth to the socket and bite down gently to hold it in place. Otherwise, you can place it in a sealed container of milk or salt water. Be sure you bring it with you!
Dental Emergency Treatment
When you call us and reach us outside of our normal business hours, then please leave a message so a team member can reach out to you quickly to talk about possible solutions and make an appointment. If you reach us and we are open, we will try to make a same-day appointment to address the issue. Our team wants to save the tooth and keep your smile whole! But what happens if the tooth is actually lost and cannot be recovered?
Tooth Replacement
If you have lost the tooth, then we could offer a replacement. For minor tooth loss, we could use a bridge to handle a single one or up to three in a row, offering lifelike results and durability, as the prosthetic can last for 10 to 15 years on average. We could also address tooth loss with dental implants, which are inserted into the jaw and act like new roots, supporting a new tooth or teeth for far longer.
If you have any questions about how we address serious concerns like a fully or partially avulsed tooth, then talk to our team today to learn more. We want to help protect your smile and keep it whole and beautiful for years to come!
