Responding To Common Dental Emergencies

prairie village emergency dentistryWhen you are faced with a dental emergency, we want you to contact our team right away. With urgent care dentistry, we can help address the issue quickly and protect your smile from complications. But in the meantime, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist has a few tips for responding to common dental emergencies to ease your discomfort.

Pain in a Tooth

If you have an ache in a tooth, try flossing on either side of the tooth and then rinse with warm water. If this fails to address the pain, or dislodge an object trapped between the tooth or under the gums, then reach out to our team. Using anything but floss could increase the risk of an injury to the teeth and gums, worsening your dental emergency situation. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever until you see us to ease your discomfort!

Chipped and Cracked Teeth

If you have chipped a tooth or broken one, then again rinse with warm water. You can use a bit of cloth or gauze to stem the bleeding, and to prevent facial swelling apply a cold compress or ice pack to the side of your face. If you can, try to recover any pieces of the tooth and bring them with you when you see us. If this is not possible, don’t worry, we can still repair the tooth. If a tooth is cracked, again this needs care to prevent infection, so please reach out to us. If you sustain an injury to the face and no damage is visible, remember that a fracture may be invisible to the naked eye, so consider an appointment.

Knocked-Out Teeth

If a tooth is knocked out, then pick it up only by the crown portion, don’t touch the roots at all. Place it in a sealed container of milk or salt water, or failing that, place it gently into the socket and bite down to keep it in place. You can again stem the bleeding with cloth, and control facial swelling with an ice pack.

Our team can restore the tooth to your socket, or repair any damage that has occurred, so we can restore your tooth and protect you from worsening decay or infection down the road. If you have any questions about how we help smiles with urgent care dentistry, or if you want to see us for your dental emergency, then reach out to us right away, even if the issue happens outside of our usual business hours.
