Your Tooth Is Knocked Out. Now What?

prairie village knocked-out toothIf you play sports and have a tooth that is knocked out, then you need to seek treatment to avoid this loss becoming permanent. With emergency dental care, our team can help improve your oral health and keep your smile intact! In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about taking on your knocked out tooth.

Responding to Your Knocked-Out Tooth

If you have a tooth knocked out, then don’t panic! When you pick it up, don’t touch the roots, only pick it up by the crown. You can rinse away any dirt and debris with gently running water, but take care not to remove any tissues. If possible, you can insert the tooth back into the socket and gently bite down to keep it in place until you can see us, should we be able to see you same-day. Otherwise, you could place the tooth in a sealed container of milk or salt water. Be sure you bring it to the office with you!

In the meantime, you can also rinse with warm water and use cloth or gauze to control any bleeding. An ice pack to the side of your face can control facial swelling, and you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever to ease your discomfort.

Seeing Our Team

Call our team right away! If you reach us during our normal business hours, we will try to arrange a same-day visit for treatment. If you call us outside of our normal business hours, then please leave a message and a team member will reach out quickly to arrange a time to see us for treatment. Don’t delay! Time is a factor, and we want to get your tooth placed into your mouth and secured again, so your smile remains whole.

Preventing Future Injuries

To help prevent future injuries, talk to our team about a custom mouthguard. We can craft one based on detailed images and measurements we take of your smile so it fits comfortably and provides a better level of protection against injury than a standard store-bought option. If you play full contact sports or any other sports or activities that could risk injury to your face or jaw, be sure you always wear a mouthguard!

If you have any questions about how we handle your knocked-out tooth, or about any of our other dental emergency services, then please reach out to our team today. We want to help you smile with confidence and avoid negative impacts on your oral health and smile beauty!
