We offer dental emergency treatment to handle issues like sudden pain from a cavity or infection, or even cracked, chipped, or knocked-out teeth. This helps save smiles of all ages from the onset of discomfort and other complications. But you can take steps to ease discomfort in the immediate aftermath too! In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about responding to common dental emergencies.
Common Examples of a Dental Emergency
As we mentioned above, a dental emergency could include a tooth that hurts suddenly as your ache could be the result of a severe cavity or infection, and lack of treatment could allow infection to spread and even the teeth to become lost or require eventual extraction. If a tooth is chipped, cracked or broken, even if the damage appears minor, you need to seek care right away! Likewise, don’t ignore a tooth that has been knocked loose or knocked out completely! When this happens, give us a call. If you reach us during our normal business hours, we will try to see you same-day for dental emergency treatment. If you call us outside of our normal business hours, then leave a message so we can reach out to you quickly for possible appointment times and instructions for protecting your smile.
Easing Your Initial Discomfort
If there is bleeding, then you can control it with a bit of cloth or some gauze or cotton balls. You can also use a cold compress or ice pack to control facial swelling, just apply it to the outside of your cheek or mouth close to the injured area. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever as needed too. If your tooth is broken, see if you can find any pieces and bring them to us in a sealed container. If a tooth is knocked out, then only pick it up by the crown, don’t touch the root or remove any tissues from the root. Place the tooth inside a sealed container of milk or salt water. Bring it with you to the office!
How We Help
Our team will ask details about the injury and how it occurred, and we will take a close look at your tooth with digital x-rays, so we can plan treatment with precision. Our team could offer improvement in one visit with bonding, or place a custom crown for more severe injuries. If you have any questions about emergency dentistry, then contact our team today.
