When To Schedule An Emergency Visit

prairie village dental emergency

If you have pain in a tooth that arises suddenly, or if a tooth has sustained an injury, then you need to see our team. With emergency dentistry, we can address these concerns and return your smile to optimal health, function, and beauty once again. In today’s blog, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist talks about when you need to schedule a dental emergency visit.

Damage and Discomfort

If you sustain an injury to your tooth, such as a chip or a fracture, you need to see our team right away. Even minor damage could allow bacteria to reach the sensitive inner tooth structures, increasing the risk of cavities and infection. If you sustain an injury and no damage is visible, consider an appointment anyway as fractures are often almost invisible to the naked eye.

If you have sudden pain in your tooth, this could be due to a cavity or infection, and treatment is needed to avoid the loss of your tooth. If an object is caught between your teeth or under the gums and floss cannot dislodge, then again let us know. Addressing injuries and pain quickly can safeguard you against worsening symptoms and complications, so you maintain a full smile.

Contacting Our Office

When you contact our team during our normal operating hours, we will try to schedule a same-day emergency appointment to see you as soon as possible. If this isn’t possible, we will try to see you in the next day or so. If your injury happens outside of our normal business hours, then don’t worry, still contact us and leave a message. A member of our team will reach out soon to discuss possible appointment times so we can see you soon and provide care.

Easing Discomfort in the Meantime

In the time between your injury and when you see us, you can take steps to ease discomfort. Stem your bleeding with cloth or gauze and apply a cold compress to the side of your face to ease swelling. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, and be sure to rinse with warm water. Bring any pieces of your tooth with you in a sealed container. If a tooth is knocked out, pick it up only by the crown, don’t touch the roots. Put the tooth in a sealed container of milk or salt water, and bring it with you.

If you have any questions about how we address dental emergencies, or if you have an aching or damaged tooth, then reach out to our team right away!
