Easing The Discomfort Following A Dental Emergency

prairie village emergency dentistryDental emergencies are a serious affair, and lack of treatment for even minor chips or cracks could leave teeth vulnerable to issues like decay or even infection. But fortunately, your Prairie Village, KS, dentist has treatment and also tips for easing discomfort until we can see you for treatment!

Common Examples of Dental Emergencies

What is a dental emergency, and when should you reach out to our team? This refers to any injury or pain in your smile that is serious enough to require immediate attention, but not severe enough that you should call 911 or proceed to the emergency room. For example, a cracked or chipped tooth, sudden pain or an object caught between your teeth, damaged or missing restorations or orthodontics, damaged dental prosthetics, and teeth that have been knocked out or at least loose. When these issues happen, we want you to call us right away. If this is during our usual office hours, we may be able to schedule a same-day appointment. If not, leave a message and we will reach out with possible appointment times to see you quickly. But in the meantime, you can take steps to ease your discomfort and prevent further complications.

Steps to Improve Your Comfort

You should first rinse with warm water and then use a piece of cloth or bit of gauze to control any bleeding. Ato prevent facial swelling, apply a cold compress or ice pack to the side of your face. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever to ease discomfort too. If a tooth is knocked out, then pick it up only by the crown, don’t touch the roots, and rinse away any dirt or debris gently. Don’t remove any tissues! Place the tooth in a sealed container of milk or salt water, and bring it with you. If a tooth is chipped and you can recover any pieces, try to bring them with you too. If this is impossible, don’t worry, we can still offer treatment to restore your smile!

Restoring Your Tooth

When you arrive, we will carefully examine your smile to plan treatment and return your smile to full function, health, and beauty. In fact, with options like dental bonding and contouring, we could offer results in one sitting. We also have custom-made crowns that look natural and provide years of quality repair and protection. If you have any questions about how to address your dental emergency, then please reach out today!
